Consumers in New York may soon get a detailed look at what is in the common household cleaners they use. Regulators in the state plan to start enforcing a 40 year old law that would require manufacturers to reveal the contents of their products. The commissioner of the State Department of Environmental Health Conservation says the decision to enforce the 1971 law is due to increased public information and concern by health advocates. Federal environmental laws don’t require ingredient lists for most household cleaning products. Some studies have linked cleaning product contents to health issues like asthma, antibiotic resistance and hormone problems. Some companies have voluntarily sent information to the DEC but the agency does not demand the information. Environmental and health advocates hope the announcement will spur broader changes in chemicals found in cleaners.
