If you recycle more now than you used to and feel good about it, you’re not alone. A new survey found Americans are two times more likely to recycle today than they were twenty years ago. 75 percent of people who recycle say they feel good helping the environment. The 20th anniversary Green Gauge survey also found Americans are more aware and concerned about environmental issues. 18 percent of those surveyed say they are confused about what’s good and bad for the environment. But that’s far fewer than the 39 percent who gave that response in 1990.
When it comes to eco-friendly habits, the survey shows most Americans are focusing on simple changes they can make. 63 percent says they are drinking tap water instead of botted, that’s up 5 percent from 2007. There’s also an increase in consumers bringing their own re-usable bags to the store. 39 percent bring their own totes to the supermarket, up 11 percent in three years.
The Green Gauge survey also asked people what factors motivate them to change their behaviors and live more sustainable lives. 49 percent say penalties or financial incentives motivate them most ranking above the influence of family, friends and government.
