Water is one of our most important natural resources. We can’t live without access to clean water. And keeping the water clean isn’t just the job of our government, that job also belongs to you and me.
One easy way to Do Your Part for clean water is to become involved in a program like Adopt-A-Stream. You adopt a section of a local creek or stream and commit to cleaning up a couple of times a year. It’s a great activity for groups like Boy or Girl Scouts, church groups or even schools.
Businesses can also volunteer to clean local waterways. Employees of Autobell Carwash have fished thousands of pounds of trash out of neighborhood creeks and streams in communities where they operate. This is some of their work along the Little Sugar Creek Greenway in Charlotte, North Carolina.
And don’t think that removing trash from local waterways is just about keeping them pretty. These creeks always flow downhill, often ending in a lake or river that is the source of drinking water for millions of people.
Check with your local county for volunteer opportunities to protect the water where you live. Residents of Charlotte, NC and Mecklenburg county can visit Charmeck.org and search “Adopt A Stream” for more information.
Clean water isn’t a luxury; it’s a requirement for a healthy life and a healthy environment. Do Your Part and keep it clean.
