Edible Play Dough!! It’s fun, safe and healthy. Combine a cup of smooth peanut butter, a cup of rolled oats, 3/4 cup of powdered milk, and 1/2 cup of honey to make an edible play dough. Adults and kids alike can sculpt (and eat!) to their heart’s content. When not in use, store the dough in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

Something I think is an awesome idea is to make a book shelf out of old books! How creative and fun. http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=98846.0

Here is a craft you can do using empty glass jars and scrap pieces of fabric. You can use these découpage jars as vases or to hold other objects you have around the house.

I just read about a way crafters can help with the gulf coast oil spill. There’s a group called Craft Hope who are calling for handmade—knit, crochet, or sew—dish towels to help the non-profits groups clean and care for the affected wildlife. If you’re kitting or crocheting, they ask that you use cotton yarn. Here’s the full story with the all the details.

Does anyone have any good ideas on crafts that I can create using wine corks?
I have seen some really cool wreaths made of wine corks. Just stand the cork up on it’s end and hot glue them in straight lines around a wreath form (use the straw kind…foam may melt and isn’t as eco-friendly anyway). I just found this photo online too and this type looks neat as well!
http://www.sterlingwineonline.com/images/decor/wine%20cork%20wreaths/wine-cork-wreath.jpgCorks also make great filler for vases when you are not using them. You can group various sizes of cork filled vases together for a quick home accent.
I’ve heard of making coasters with them. I like this bulletin board key rack that i found at Etsy. You could definitely make this yourself with a glue gun, reclaimed wood, and a few hooks.

I never knew that about those little scrapbooking embellishments. My mom just gave me a huge box of those that she had collected over the years. I’ll use them every now and again but I really enjoy making my own too!

Scrapbooking can be a very un-green hobby. When I realize most of the cute papers and embellishments I loved were made from virgin materials, I had to make a change. Now, my first crafting rule is to try and make it instead of buy it. It’s useful that I’m a packrat and save everything but here are some of my shortcuts for greener scrapbooking:
- plan your pages before you print the photos — all of my photos are digital and I only print the pictures that I know I will use
- instead of buying generic themed sheets for backgrounds, use old maps, programs, or other event memorabilia
- draw or stencil your own designs on plain paper for a unique and personalized background
- instead of purchasing packaged die cut deco, draw and cut out your shapes from scrap paper
- use scrap fabrics, ribbons, thread, yarn, buttons, or any left over paper and photo pieces as borders or accents
What are some of your eco-friendly crafting tips?
These are some great ideas! I also like to use old greeting cards for scrapbooking.
That’s creative! if you ever end up with too many cards, St Jude’s Ranch for Children in Boulder City, NV has a recycled greeting card program that accepts all occasion cards year round. I also found a a neat craft that turns a greeting card into a small gift box. I’ll have to give it a try next Christmas.
