Moving to Washington Guide for Military Families

The Washington Department of Veterans Affairs publishes an annual “Resources for Military Families in WA” guide and will release an updated Moving to Washington Guide for Military Families in 2025 to help service members and their families access benefits, services, and relocation resources.

Virginia provides educational support to children of military personnel relocating to military housing, helping ensure smooth school enrollment, placement, and continuity during transitions.

States use recommendations to strengthen implementation of the Military Interstate Children’s Compact, improving consistency in enrollment, placement, eligibility, and graduation processes for military-connected students across state lines.

Colorado HB22‑1102 prohibits discrimination in housing sales and rentals based on veteran or military status, ensuring military members and veterans cannot be denied, withheld, or excluded from housing opportunities.

Rhode Island’s H‑5593/S‑0241A prohibits housing discrimination based on military or familial status, banning questions about military status in rental or home purchase processes and protecting military families’ housing rights.

Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges

Washington supports military-connected students and families through the State Board for Community and Technical Colleges by providing guidance, resources, and programs that help reduce barriers and support continuity of education during military relocations.

Priority Student Enrollment

California requires school districts to provide priority enrollment, immediate attendance, timely credit transfers, and transition support for children of active duty, Reserve, and National Guard families.

Student Enrollment Flexibility

Florida supports military-connected students by providing enrollment flexibility and protections that help maintain continuity of education during military-related relocations.

Student Enrollment Support

Kentucky requires school districts to support enrollment continuity for military-connected students, allowing timely placement, attendance, and academic progression when families relocate due to military orders.

Maryland House Bill 1237, Chapter 708, Section 8-413 (2023)

Maryland requires school districts to adopt enrollment and placement policies that ensure timely placement, attendance, and transfer support for military-connected students, helping maintain continuity of education during military relocations.

Revised Code of Washington, Chapter 28A.155.260

Washington requires school districts to provide timely enrollment, placement, and support for military-connected students, helping reduce disruption and maintain continuity of education during relocations related to military service.
